I did a little calculating and realized that together, we covered over 2,293 miles this weekend.

That’s right … 2,293+ miles.

woah.

Our transport drivers & pups crossed through Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington DC, Maryland & Pennsylvania.

I calculated a bit more and realized that we had over 55 people total come together this weekend to help us move 15 pups on 2 separate transports. SERIOUSLY AMAZING! The fact that there are that many folks (& hundreds more every single weekend) working together to save lives … that just rocks our socks off!

To each of you who drove, crossposted, “shared” our link on facebook, signed up to foster, pitched in for gas money, overnighted, took photos, walked a puppy or sent happy thoughts for our tiny travelers…

WE NEED FOSTER HOMES!

Considering fostering a rescued pup? Interested in the benefits of having a second (or third) dog in your home without the extra expense? Want to help save the life of a pup from a high-kill shelter? Interested in saving a life? If so – keep reading!

We feel that fostering with Bonnie Blue Rescue is a truly rewarding experience and hope that you will, too! Our foster families are often the different between pups being euthanized in a high-kill shelter and finding a forever family. Bonnie Blue Rescue would simply not be possible without fosters.

The more fosters we have .. the more pups that we can save!

That being said, it takes a special person to become a foster parent to a rescued dog. You have to be willing to give your heart and home to a pup who will become part of your family for a few weeks (up to a few months). Many people think that they couldn’t love and care for a pet for only a short period of time only to hand them over to another family, a forever family. But after seeing happily ever after updates of your foster pup in their forever family — you’ll be hooked!

To tell you a little bit about Bonnie Blue Rescue – all of our foster pups are in individual foster homes, rather than being kept in kennels like many shelters/adoption agencies. This gives our fosters pups the chance to experience what “real life” in a home is like before going to their forever homes. The pups that we have in foster care are learning good puppy manners, housebreaking, crate training, and basic obedience while in their foster homes. All of our foster dogs go to their new homes up to date on vaccinations, spayed/neutered, and microchipped. Bonnie Blue Rescue really prides ourselves on working with our foster families to place each of our foster pups into the perfect forever home. We want to get to know our adopters to make sure that we find the best possible fit for their family.

Our pups are pulled from high-kill shelters in the South and then are transported to foster homes after a mandatory two-week hold period to make sure that they are healthy before transport. Fostering can be a short term experience (1-2 weeks), can be a longer-term experience (several months), or can be a permanent experience (in the case of “retirement fosters”). Puppies are usually adopted within 2-4 weeks, senior dogs typically take 2-3 months to place. It truly just depends on the dog. Bonnie Blue Rescue provides all veterinary care for our rescue pups, including monthly flea/tick and heartworm preventative. We try to send each foster puppy to their new foster home with toys, chewies, and treats. Crates can be provided if needed. We just ask that our foster families provide food and love.

Zora is one lucky, lucky girl! She was rescued just in the nick of time from a high-kill shelter in rural Louisiana. Zora’s littermates are all moving to foster homes, but this lucky girl already has a family of her own! Can you help Zora make it to Orlando, FL this weekend to meet her forever family? They have previously adopted from our rescue and are a wonderful houla-savvy couple who will spoil this little lady ROTTEN!

Nugget can be a little shy when she first meets new people but with a lot of love and a little patience, she warms right up!

We have some of the cutest puppies in the South hitting the road to rescue this weekend! The Z puppies ended up in a high-kill shelter in rural Lousiana just before Christmas. Thanks to our awesome friends at PAWS NELA, we were able to get these sweet little bits into short-term foster homes until they were old enough to have a few rounds of vaccines under their belts. Now it’s time for them to hit the road to find their forever families! Sweet Blanche got left behind on our transport from last weekend, so she is extra excited to make her way to rescue this weekend. She is a sweet, loving girl who is bound to smother you with pittie kisses. Skeeter and Phil are two lucky boys who made it out of a high-kill shelter in rural Georgia. Thanks to their foster momma, they are healthy, happy boys who are ready to make their way to rescue (Fuzzy Face Rescue) to find their forever homes, too! Because of the number of dogs on this run — we have arranged for two drivers per leg for almost every leg! Please do not let the number of dogs on the run keep you from driving!

THE FINE PRINT: I am a volunteer transport coordinator who has a network of volunteer drivers and we assist rescues in their efforts to save death row dogs and place them in approved adoptive homes or with approved rescues. All rescues must have proper permits to import dogs and all dogs must have health certificates to cross state lines. Please remember that I am dependent on what the senders tell me about our passengers’ temperaments. The very nature of rescue transport creates some risk for those who participate in it; even a good-natured dog may find it stressful to be passed from stranger to stranger and cooped up with unfamiliar dogs and may act in uncharacteristic ways. Charming Charlie

Sweet Charlie is our newest addition.

He is a 2 year old Labrador Retriever boy.

Charlie was rescued from the streets in Augusta, GA, where he had been a stray for sometime. Charlie was scanned for a microchip and his owners were searched for … but no one came forward to claim this amazing boy.

Charlie was at risk of being turned over to the local shelter, so we offered to take him into our rescue program. This sweet guy has already been through the heartbreak of losing his family … we couldn’t stand to see him lose his life in a shelter, too.

Charlie is now in a short-term foster home in Georgia (THANK YOU, FRAN!!!) & will be moving to Birmingham, AL area in just a few weeks.

Charlie is one well-mannered pup. He is sweet, obedient, loves everyone he meets, and is eager to please.

He even shakes hands when he first meets new friends.

Charlie went into the vet today for vaccines and a check up, and we learned that he is VERY HIGH heartworm positive. Because of this, Charlie is not a good candidate for slow heartworm treatment (which we try to do with younger/healthier/light heartworm positive dogs).

There is a wonderful vet in Birmingham, AL area who can treat Charlie for heartworms — $300 with our rescue discount — but we do not currently have the funds to cover his treatment. :/

We hope to start Charlie’s treatment on Monday, January 30th.
