Wacky Week

Sorry for the lack of posts, friends. To say our small Bonnie Blue Crew has been covered up would be the understatement of the year. We’ve had some sick pups on our hands. Many of the weim pups came down with coccidia and a bit of  “shelter funk”. A couple of days after that resolved, we started noticing some major changes in our little ones.

See Anna’s foster boy Solo here. One day he was looking totally normal …

and the next day his legs really started bowing:

Solo’s awesome foster mom pulled some serious strings and was able to get him into a specialist ASAP. We’re so very thankful that she did because on the same day as Solo’s specialist appointment, Macy’s legs started changing too!

24 hours after that Barney, Jax and Viggo & Violet experienced some shaky legs and slight bowing.

24 hours later – sweet Andy man went from “normal legs” to “crab legs” (see photo below)

We were all a little on-edge. Thanks to the specialist, a set of x-rays, and a local vet visit we knew that our pups had a soft tissue contracture. After hours of research we started to learn what that was really about. Basically, a soft tissue contracture could be caused by many things – nutritional deficiency at birth (or as young pups), too much protein/fat in the diet, too much exercise (jogging, etc), etc. This soft tissue contracture, also referred to as a carpal flexural deformity, is both common in large breed dogs and absoluely treatable . But as a foster mom, I have to admit, its one of the scariest things I’ve ever seen.

In light of the specialist visit, xrays, multiple vet visits, etc – we have bumped up our chipin page and are still raising money to help offset some of the bills on our little ones. If you’re interested in reading more about them – or learning what a chipin page is all about – check it out online at http://bonniebluerescue.chipin.com/weim-babies Please note that every dollar raised FOR the weim babies will be spent ON the weim babies. If you’d prefer to contribute in another way, please contact us at bonniebluerescue@gmail.com for more information.

More updates on the little ones to come!
