Sweet Kira is very sick. :(

UPDATE 4/19 8:00pm: Just spoke with Kira’s vet and then Kira’s foster mom, Stacey, who went and spent several hours at the vet clinic today loving on baby Kira. Kira had a set of x-rays done today that did not show any masses or lodged foreign objects, but will have another set of x-rays likely done tomorrow to see if anything has changed internally. She has been on IV cath and IV fluids w/ injectible antibiotics for many hours prior to my conversation with the veterinarian. Unfortunately, she did not show any signs of improvement yet.Stacey reported back tonight that Kira is still a very, very sick little girl and that she looked worse tonight than she did this morning when she went to the clinic. 😦 Please keep our baby girl in your thoughts and prayers – we are hoping for a quiet, restful night for her and for much healing to take place overnight. It is obvious that Kira is going to need continued hospitalization for at least the next few days, which means that we will need to eventually increase the amount of her “chipin”. In the meantime, can you help us by sharing Kira’s story on your facebook page or through email to your family and friends? We are getting more and more concerned about having enough money in the bank account to cover Kira’s emergency medical treatment and take care of the other pups we currently have in rescue. Thank you in advance for your help in crossposting, donating, or sending happy thoughts for our girl.

Kira’s Story:

Kira is one of ten pups rescued from Ouachita Parish Animal Shelter (OPAS) in West Monroe, Louisiana. These pups were surrendered at the shelter with their momma Clover when they were just three weeks old. Kira and her family spent several weeks quarantined in short-term foster care with Jen, a rock star foster mom in LA. Once they were vaccinated (twice) and healthy enough/old enough to move to long-term foster homes, they started their journey north. Kira & her littermates traveled to their Bonnie Blue Rescue foster homes a little over 10 days ago.

Kira has been a happy, healthy normal puppy since coming into rescue but around midnight last night she started having vomiting and diarrhea. She has not been able to keep down food or water since last night.

Kira went to the vet first thing this morning and has been through more tests in the last eight hours than most pups have in their life. Kira tested negative for parvo, coccidia, giardia and worms (though her fecal sample was less than ideal). She shows no signs of bowel/abdomen obstruction or of a foreign body in her system. She is going through a battery of tests this afternoon including a CBC, and a glucose test. We have given her vet our permission to run other tests as needed, our primary goal is getting this girl back to her normal healthy and happy state so that she can eventually find her forever family!

In less than 12 hours Kira went from zooming around her foster home romping and playing to being so lethargic that she is not able to walk or lift her head.

Kira is currently hospitalized and is on an IV catheter, IV fluids, antibiotics, and is on anti-vomiting and anti-diarrheal meds. We are calling to check on Kira every few hours and are in close communication with the vet and the vet tech who are taking care of her. We feel like sweet Kira is in the best hands possible and are so hopeful that our sweet girl will bounce back quickly. As I’m sure you all know illnesses that come on this suddenly, especially in puppies this small/young, can be life threatening. We are beyond hopeful that our little one will continue fighting and will pull through without complications.
Please keep sweet Kira and her foster family in your thoughts and prayers – we are all so worried about this sick little baby girl.

Prior to hospitalization, Kira’s bill totalled approximately $250 (exam fee, diagnostic tests, etc). The “low end” cost of hospitalization was $350 with the high end closer to $800. Our “emergency fund” does not come close to covering these expenses, but at the same time Kira would have died without immediate treatment. Though it may not be a sound financial decision, when Bonnie Blue Rescue commits to a pup we see them through no matter what.

But we need a few friends to help us!
